Tips for New Tradesmen: How to install PVC panels

Continuing with our ‘Tips for New Tradesmen’ series, our next topic addresses installation of PVC panels in bathrooms. With wall panelling continuing to be an increasing trend in bathrooms, it’s important to know how fitting panels differs from tile installation.

We’ve subsequently summarised the key steps below, along with a list of tools required to do the job. So, if your customers need shower panels or wall panelling fitted anywhere else in their bathroom, you’re good to go.

Tools required:

  • Protective goggles.
  • Pencil and masking tape.
  • Tape measure.
  • Sandpaper.
  • Caulking gun.
  • Sharp blade.
  • Electric saw or a fine tooth saw.
  • Adhesive.
  • Foam tape.
  • Sealing kit.

Step one: Measure

The first thing you need to do is to measure the space where the wall panels will go, including both vertical and horizontal measurements. Make sure you measure all the walls which will be fitted with panels, just to be sure you have the correct details – and in case some are different sizes (in the case of an alcove or a sloped ceiling, for example).

Step two: Mark the cutting lines

Next, mark out where you’ll cut along the panels to fit them to size, using a pencil to do this and/or masking tape, if this helps.

Step three: Cut the panels to size

Once marked out, you can then commence cutting, using your saw to shape the panels to the correct size for fitting. NB Remember to wear safety goggles for this.

Step four: Sanding for a smooth finish

Using your sandpaper, smooth off the edges of the panels before fitting, to ensure a tidy finish. It’s also a good idea to run the sandpaper over the back of the panel, so it sticks to the adhesive more easily.

Step five: Install the trim

Before fitting the panels, install the trim using adhesive. The panels will subsequently be attached to these.

Step six: Fit the panels

Attach three strips of foam tape to the back of the panel, placing them parallel along its length. Next, apply the adhesive, putting a strip down both sides of the panel. For even coverage and a more secure fit it’s also advised to apply the adhesive in a zip-zag pattern from top to bottom, before putting circles of adhesive over the panel.

Remove the backing from the foam tape and then add adhesive to the trim, as well as along the edges of the panel, before lining it up and attaching it to the wall.

Top tip: Slide the panel into the trim at an angle, to prevent the foam tape from sticking to the wall before you’ve achieved the correct positioning.

Step seven: Repeat until all panels are fitted

Do the same for all the remaining panels, making sure to push them firmly into place for secure installation.

Step eight: Add sealant to secure

Once the panels are all fitted, you can then add sealant to the base to secure them. If you have caps or covers to attach to the trims, then you can put these in place now as well.
