A tradesman’s guide to electric vs thermostatic showers

With showers being a staple of most modern bathrooms, it can be difficult for customers to decide between electric or thermostatic varieties, as both come with their pros and cons. With this in mind, we’ve compiled a brief guide to both, highlighting the key features and benefits of each type.

The key difference between electric and thermostatic showers is the way in which they heat water. Electric showers are supplied with cold water which they then heat with electricity, while thermostatic showers receive a mixture of hot and cold water which is combined before reaching the showerhead. Being able to maintain a consistent water temperature for the duration of the shower also makes thermostatic models very appealing to most people.

A key feature and indeed benefit of electric showers is the fact that they heat water on demand and are an efficient and cost-effective option. Without relying on a boiler to heat the water, you can simply turn the shower on and you’re good to go.

Saving time for your customers as well as money, this ultimately makes them very attractive and electric showers also tend to be more affordable to purchase. There are, of course, always drawbacks to anything and electric showers do require a mains water supply, so if your customer’s home doesn’t have this, then they won’t be able to install this type of shower. Also, as it’s supplied by electricity, any power outages will obviously also affect the functioning of the shower.

Another disadvantage to electric showers is the fact they use more energy than thermostatic showers and don’t have in-built heat protection, which gives a risk of scalding if the water temperature changes for any reason.

Advantages of electric showers

  • More affordable to buy
  • Heat water instantly, when you need it

Disadvantages of electric showers

  • Not very energy-efficient, which will result in higher bills
  • No in-built thermal protection
  • Often have lower water pressure

It’s also worth noting that electric showers will require both a plumber to install the water pipes and an electrician to connect the power supply.

At Bathshack we have a range of electric showers at great-value prices, including the Triton Amore DuElec Electric Shower in Gloss Black. With a sleek gloss black cover and a handy digital display, it comes with a choice of diverting the water between a five-spray pattern showerhead or a luxurious rainfall showerhead. It’s also activated by a touch-activated power selector and is fitted with a temperature-control dial.

Another of our electric showers, this one with a contrasting white look, is the Triton Fast-Fit Electric Shower, which has a three-function handset along with separate power and water flow controls.

With a variety of styles available, we supply a range of high-quality electric showers with different features, so if this is something your customers are interested in, then we’re sure to have a product to suit.

Thermostatic showers

Renowned for their ability to maintain a constant water temperature throughout the showering experience by mixing hot and cold water before it reaches the showerhead, thermostatic showers are a popular option for many people.

Thanks to this thermostatic control, users can therefore set the water to their preferred temperature and know that this will be maintained for the duration of their shower. Despite any fluctuations that might occur in water pressure, the temperature will stay the same, which is a big advantage to most people. These showers also tend to have more temperature setting options than electric showers and come with in-built thermal protection, so are especially great for kids, as there’s no risk of scalding.

While they tend to require more of an initial investment, thermostatic showers last longer and are more energy-efficient, so will save your customers money in the long run.

Advantages of thermostatic showers

  • Maintain a consistent water temperature
  • Thermal protection
  • More energy-efficient
  • Last longer

Disadvantages of thermostatic showers

  • More of an initial investment when purchasing
  • The heating system may take up a bit more space
